Monthly Archives: March 2013

It is common knowledge that my family’s favorite pastime is eating, and every special occasion would mean celebrating it over a meal at a fancy restaurant. Last weekend, my family and I went out for a lunch date for no particular reason. Not that there’s nothing at all to celebrate about, but we hardly do something like this nowadays just because.

I was with Miggy when I first dined at Yabu: The House of Katsu in SM Mall of Asia. I’ve heard a lot of raves about this Japanese restaurant from friends, so in one of our random dates, we decided to try it out. The restaurant was called as such because it offers a wide variety of katsu on its menu. With every meal’s serving size, we find the PhP 300–500 (US$ 8–12) price range very reasonable. Every katsu meal is served with unlimited Japanese rice and cabbage salad. What makes it more interesting is the part where you get to make your own katsu sauce (as shown in their website). I promised to take my family to this restaurant, and I thought the timing was perfect.

After a very sumptuous lunch, we all went for a much-needed walk. You know, to somehow burn the calories we consumed, enough to fill our recommended daily intake (RDI). Shopping wasn’t in our agenda that day, but the ladies (Mom, Jan, and myself) found ourselves going in at Forever21. We got ourselves a few things, something we all thought that we deserve. After which, Mom and Dad had to rush to the SM Mall of Asia Arena to watch a live concert. Foursome, a repeat performance by the Philippines’ top local artists: Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, Regine Velasquez, and Ogie Alcasid, is Mom’s belated anniversary and Valentine’s day gift from Dad.

Something interesting happened that night. My brothers, Jan, and I were on our way to the Arena a few minutes before the show commenced to give Dad his camera. Initially, he didn’t bring his Lumix because it looks like a digital SLR, and according to security, cameras like this aren’t allowed inside. To Dad’s dismay, there were a lot of people who had their dSLR inside. When we walked pass the entrance for employees and/or VIPs, someone called our attention. Apparently, it was one of the back-up dancers offering us three free tickets to see the show. Because we were much in a hurry to take Dad’s camera to him, we completely ignored him. On our way back to the mall, we realized that it must be a legit offer, even coming to a theory that the owners of those tickets are the dancer’s family members/friends who couldn’t make it to the show. We were hoping we could still score those free tickets, but the dancer may have given them to someone else. What is missed chances!

Despite the thick crowd and traffic on our way home, that weekend was one of the best we ever had! Surely, no particular reason is necessary to spend weekends like this with family and friends.

I would like to believe that life is not at all complex. Every thing around us are binary: big or small; high or low; black or white; old or new. The list goes on. It is actually men who make things complicated for themselves. Anyway, the one thing I have always believed in is that there are angels—the good and the bad.

Source: en.wikipedia.org

I was in high school when I learned about birth angels. I was born on a Tuesday, and according to my mother, my birth angel is St. Raphael. St. Raphael is one of seven Archangels who stand before the throne of the Lord. [...] Raphael’s name means “God heals.” This identity came about because of the biblical story which claims that he “healed” the earth when it was defiled by the sins of the fallen angels in the apocryphal book of Enoch. Raphael is also identified as the angel who moved the waters of the healing sheep pool. He is also the patron of the blind, of happy meetings, of nurses, of physicians and of travelers. Aside from a rosary, I remember having always carried a small figure of St. Raphael in my purse wherever I go.

I don’t know if anyone has really seen an angel upfront, but I believe that angels do exist. Let me cite a few personal examples to support my claim here.

When my family and I were at a trying situation, it came to a point that Mom and Dad had exhausted all possible resources. One day, they were both sitting in the couch, thinking. On their own, they prayed for God’s mercy, to just give them a sign on how our family’s going to get through the day. On the other hand, I was on my way home from work when I asked Dad their whereabouts. He said they were at home, wondering what to feed us for dinner. I told them to get ready because we’re going to do the groceries that very same day. Mom and Dad burst into tears upon receiving my message, thinking God has answered their prayers in an instant. Angels come in different forms. Your angel may not necessarily be dressed in ethereal clothing nor has halo and wings, but your angel may be a friend, a neighbor, a family member, or a loved one.

I also believe that our guardian angels work every minute of every day. I know many of us has been stuck in terrible traffic or has missed the bus/train on our way to work. There are also times when we were already halfway through our destination when we realize we left something important at home. Whenever I’m in a similar situation, I don’t think of it as a coincidence. I consider it a work of my angel, saving me from another awful situation such as accidents or something else that depicts danger. In my head, I say a short prayer of gratitude, knowing that I’m being taken care of.

The next time you find yourself inconvenienced for no particular reason, no matter how much in a hurry you are, think of your angel doing you a favor. Relax. He’s just taking orders from God; doing his job to protect you.

I know I have posted these on Twitter and Instagram last week, but I still could not get over with my family’s reaction to this particular conversation on iMessage between my favorite cousin and I:

The photo above was taken on my 18th birthday when he played the role as my escort. Because it’s Thursday, I just would like to take part in the #ThrowBackThursday hashtag. I tagged my other cousins in my post, and we all had one hell of a good laugh. I missed my cousins!

P.S. If you’re wondering what he looks like now, here’s a latest photo of him:

I’m so dead when he finds this out! Hahaha! I love you, Kuya!

P.P.S. Can you tell I had trouble translating the message in English? Key word: colloquialism.

…I have a little confession to make. I may be suffering from mild chronic anxiety. Okay, I haven’t really consulted a specialist on this, but reading through various definitions of the said syndrome sort of validates my claim. Or I may be just overreacting.

Chronic anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry about everyday things that is disproportionate to the actual source of worry.

Okay, it may not be as excessive nor uncontrollable as it seems, but it is oftentimes irrational anxiety about certain things. Just to set the record straight, I am not taking any prohibited drugs nor am I alcohol-induced.

Miggy and I are going through a rough patch. No, it is nothing grave, but something else that we find equally important. You see, Miggy was transferred to Army Reserve early this year. After six years of being on Active Service, he opted to return to school, and take up Criminal Justice as a bachelor’s degree. Since he moved to California, he no longer lives within the base. According to him, he only needs to report to the camp once a month for a year or so in lieu of Active Service during his tenure.

He really wanted to get a job immediately, so he submitted his resumé to various employers as soon as he got back from his Manila trip. It’s been a month since, and he remains unemployed. It isn’t so much about not having enough to sustain his basic needs, but being jobless makes him grow weary. Every day he would tell me that no one has called him yet. Or that there are those who called, but when he told them that he’s getting married late this year, and that it would require him to go on leave for some time, they turned him down. Anxiety # 1, ladies and gentlemen.

Second on my list would be wedding jitters. I know this may sound ridiculous because our wedding’s distant enough to conceive a baby, but I certainly feel the pressure building up most especially when I look into my to-do’s list. So much to do, so little time. Considering we’re not even having a grand wedding.

Perhaps the third culprit in my distress will be my trust issues. Experiences from the past might have contributed to this pressing concern, and everyday—every single day—is a struggle to overcome such feeling. For almost a week now, I have been having nightmares dreams about awful things that give me a massive headache upon waking up. I don’t know where the heck these illusions are coming from, but they are slowly eating me up inside. Let me get this straight, though: there is no issue of infidelity or whatsoever involved here, but it gets worse when I start thinking about all possible would-be scenarios.

Every time I entertain the slightest doubt in my head, I tend to become invasive. I will exert all my efforts in searching for answers. More often than not, the truth confirms my assumptions, and it consumes me because I never want to be the last to know. I become jealous even for the wrong reasons. That green-eyed monster works his way up, messing with my head. It becomes ugly to the point that it manifests in the form of restlessness, difficulty in concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and even sleep disturbance.

Whenever I feel an onset of any of these symptoms, I convince myself into opening up with one of my closet friends, just letting it all out until I feel the lump in my throat gone. There are days when I don’t feel like talking, so I use up my energy on physical activities such as working out or playing sports. I am able to exhaust all the negativity inside until my head clears up, and eventually feel better.

I may be overreacting, but awareness is always a good thing, in my opinion. I am a work-in-progress. Every day remains a constant battle with things that stress me out, but I’m trying to always see the good in everything to ward off unnecessary thoughts. If these things no longer work for me, then I guess I need to seek professional help, but until then, I should be fine.

Been in a similar situation? How did you deal with anxiety? If not, how would you? Let’s talk. I’d love to hear from you.

I have been working with the same employer for three years now. Three years and four months to be exact. Graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering (a.k.a Management Engineering), I took part in a management training program in preparation for the job I was called for.

You may find it weird that my first work experience was in the medical field. I was part of the then-Healthcare Business Unit of the company. The training program had something to do with medical transcription (MT) which is an allied health profession, which deals in the process of transcription, or converting voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians or other healthcare professionals, into text format.

Industrial Engineering and Medical Transcription? I KNOW, RIGHT?

Well, that was my initial reaction when I learned what the training program was all about. I was only enlightened with the nature of the job during our first day orientation. To put it simply, in order to lead and manage people, one must also learn the core job functions of your staff. Since we were supposed to manage a group of medical transcriptionists, we had to start from the bottom-up.

A few major things expected in our daily classroom-setup training are the following:

  1. Learn the different states in America since our clientele are US-based. Once on-board, the time difference will be a critical element in meeting the expected turnaround time (TAT).
  2. The ability to tell native American speakers from non-native ones.
  3. Wider knowledge and familiarity with common medical terminologies.
  4. SPEED TYPING.

Based on personal experience, the files with non-native American speakers are the most difficult ones to transcribe. Every day, we were expected to transcribe two to three files with minimal errors as practice. It may sound like a piece of cake, but it wasn’t. I have to admit, though, that the third and last items on my list above put me in a better position than my co-trainees.

Now, onto speed typing. On our first day of training, we had to record our initial typing speed test scores. At the end of every week, we were expected to beat our own personal record. Modesty aside, I scored 55 words per minute (wpm) in my first try, and it fell under the fast/touch typing category. According to Wikipedia, the average typing speed is 35wpm. Most of my co-trainees fell under this category, thus I was referred to as a touch typist. I guess pulling those all-nighters, chatting over Yahoo! Messenger (instead of studying) did me well, too. Just kidding! KIDS, DO NOT LISTEN TO ME!

It’s unfortunate, however, that after two months, there had been a change in management, and they were forced to discontinue the training program. In effect, I lost my job because the last ones to get in were the first to leave. Well, I’d say it was a blessing in disguise because three weeks later, I was re-employed by the same company for a different business unit. Though the training program ended soon, I still learned a lot from the experience.

Earlier today, I thought of taking the test again (one try only), and this was what I got:

Ha! I never realized that my typing speed has improved this much! Why not try it just for kicks (no cheating!), too? Test your typing speed here, and let me know what you got. Have fun, guys!

P.S. Shout-out to all new followers! I hope you enjoy your stay here. :)

Have you ever been asked to become a godparent?

In February, Miggy and I stood as godparents to an innocent baby girl’s baptism. Many times have I been asked to become a godparent to kids whose parents I’m not so familiar with or that I don’t personally know at all. According to Filipino superstitions, one should not refuse an invitation of becoming a godparent to a child because it’s bad luck or something like that. Did I mention I only recognized one of all those kids they claim my godchildren?

You see, standing as godparent to a child means you are going to act as second parent to him from the day he was baptized until the day you can no longer function as one. Because of terminal sickness or old age, that is. It’s sad that in the Philippines, Filipinos are accustomed to thinking that the more godparents that child has, the more gifts he will get on Christmas day. Faux pas.

Incidentally, this baby girl, Chanel, I’m talking about is Miggy’s cousin’s first born. Before the actual baptism ceremony, the parents and godparents underwent a quick seminar/briefing. It felt good being there for the right reasons. Chanel’s mother was praised by one of the church staff for bringing in only a pair of godparents. Ideally, that should be the case, but there was one particular group who had a dozen or so godparents for their child.

Chanel’s mother got pregnant with her out of wedlock. If I may add, she was only in her early 20s, and still in school at the time. Although I won’t further delve into details, it had been a stressful pregnancy for her. Would you believe that the baby girl had no name until she turned three months old? It was then that Miggy and I came into the picture.

During Miggy’s short stay here, we were given the opportunity to talk some sense out of his cousin, especially now that she’s a mother. Her priorities and lifestyle in general must change. We know it’s not going to be easy, but there’s no point distressing oneself on something that’s already done. What’s more important is how to deal with the current situation she’s in. After all, there are a lot of single mothers who were able to raise their children well on their own.

So, what makes a good godparent?

I think there’s no particular rule book on how to become the best godparents in the world. As I’ve mentioned earlier, we will serve as the child’s second parent/guardian most especially when our intervention is needed. More than anything else, it’s the child’s welfare that we must always take into consideration.

I believe nothing happens by chance. We were called to be Chanel’s godparents because we have a mission, and we were happy to oblige. Who can resist a child so innocent and naïve as Chanel, anyway?

The thing is, even after having presented with eight blog awards, I still wonder what I did in this life to deserve all of this. I am just a girl who had a dream of becoming an inspiration to people from all walks of life. It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Writing—to me—has always been an avenue for expressing my thoughts and sharing my experiences with friends and family.

I may not be the best blogger—if not writer—there is, but the 124 followers and few admirers of this blog make every post worth the effort. Needless to say, as my readership grow, I am compelled to write more interesting stuff—not to impress—but to inspire them for the same reason they stumbled into my humble website.

As I accept this award, I only need to thank a few people: Moment Matters, for believing in the goodness of my Eat, Pray, Love entry; all my followers and occasional visitors who take their time in reading, liking, and leaving a comment or two in my posts; my family and friends who serve as my inspiration in everything that I do; and last, but certainly not the least, I thank God for the gift—this gift—that makes me a source of inspiration to other people.

To God be the glory!

I don’t have a sense of entitlement or that I deserve this. You’d be surprised at the lack of competition between nominees – I think a lot of it is imposed from the outside. Can I have my champagne now?

…but wait, there’s more! Just last week, a recent follower, mother | worker | chef | wife, nominated me for yet another blog awards. Yes, plural. Not one, but three more awards to add to my chest! Indeed, when it rains, it pours. She actually bestowed me with The Versatile Blogger, Very Inspiring Blogger, and Shine On Blogger Awards. That’s quite a lot to take in!

For this recognition, I am supposed to tell seven (7) more things about myself. I’m not so much of an interesting person, really, but I’ll try. Here goes…

  1. Unlike my good friend who nominated me for this award, I can swim and ride a bike. By swim, I mean I can do laps in an Olympic-sized pool.
  2. I love singing to songs by The Corrs.
  3. When I was younger, I wanted to be a doctor. Biology class in second year high school made me think otherwise.
  4. When people hear my real name, I am often mistaken as a boy. IT. NEVER. FAILS.
  5. I still own and use two of my baby things: my red comb and coral earrings.
  6. All my cellphones back then were hand-me-downs from either Dad or Mom. I first had a brand new phone in 2009. It was my parents’ birthday gift for me.
  7. I love paper and office supplies. When I get colorful pens for my birthday or Christmas, I feel like I’m in heaven. For reals.

It’s as easy as ABC, guys! Congratulations and good luck! Again, a big THANK YOU to Miss MWCW for this wonderful recognition!

Following my entry on the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award, on 17 February, I received a comment notification from Good Golly Miss Molly, letting me know that she has nominated me for a Liebster Award! Hold on a second—A WHAT? Okay, I honestly didn’t know what liebster means until Nica received the same award some months ago. According to her, liebster is a German word which means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. WHOA.

Miss Molly has prepared 11 questions for me:

Best day of your life so far. I got this from “City Slickers,” that scene when the guys are riding along with the herd and talking. And like their rules, the best day can’t be the day any of your kids were born.
The best day of my life so far is when my then-boyfriend-now-fiancé asked me to marry him. Ask me again in a few months, and I’ll give you a better answer. *winks*

If you could be somebody else for a day, who would it be and why?
I know this is weird, but I’d like to be Lady Gaga for a day. I want to know how it feels to wear those hideous unique wardrobe. What is an extremist?

What are your three favorite foods?
As of writing, I crave for Crunchy California Maki Roll, Beef Bulgogi, and Seafood Pasta. Oh, this question made me drool!

When did you consider yourself grown-up (if you do)? If you don’t consider yourself grown-up, what will be the marker?
Perhaps the day I realized that my role as the eldest is to look after my brothers more than anything else, that’s when I considered myself a grown-up. It was the time when I began thinking of my brothers’ welfare more than my own.

What tokens, charms, special objects do you keep around to inspire your writing or other work you do if you’re not a writer?
It’s not really a token nor a charm, but I have to wear my eye glasses on whenever I’m in the computer or just plain reading in my iPad to minimize eye-strain.

If you could make up your own astrology signs, what would the name of your sign be and what would be the symbol? Explain.
I’m really sorry, Miss Molly, but I couldn’t think of an answer for this one. :(

Who was your favorite high school teacher and why.
My favorite high school teacher will have to be my senior year English teacher, Mr. Aliton Infante. Next to my mother, Sir Al was the best English teacher I ever had. It was during his tenure that I developed the confidence in public speaking and performing (theater) for a large audience. This holds true to this day.

What was the last live music performance you attended? How did you like it?
Perhaps the last live music I attended was back in college. During the Christmas holiday season, our university holds an annual Paskuhan celebration in the campus, and inviting a few local bands over to play for the students is one of the much-anticipated part of the event.

As a kid, what was your favorite book? Do you still have a copy?
I’ll have to go with Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. I don’t have the book, but I do have the CD version.

Someone once said it’s not what we give that defines love but what we give up. Have you ever given up anything for love? What and why?
Technically, I haven’t, but soon I’ll have to give up proximity from my family. When I get married, I’ll have to move across the world to live with my husband. I know it’s going to be a very big adjustment for me and my family, but I’ll do it for love.

What’s your favorite mode of travel?
Travel by car. It gives me the opportunity to stop, pull over, and digest the beautiful scenery along the way.

Eleven Facts About Me

  1. I am afraid of lizards, geckos, salamanders, iguanas, and all other creatures of the same kind.
  2. I have never flunked any subject in school until college. It cost me another year to finish my engineering degree.
  3. I cry whenever a pet of ours dies. Yes, I even cried over the death of a goldfish.
  4. I have quite a retentive memory.
  5. To this day, I am afraid of mascots and clowns.
  6. I have one prominent dimple in my left cheek. (Got it from Dad!)
  7. I have personally seen the late Blessed John Paul II twice during the World Youth Day in 1995 here in the Philippines.
  8. I have the tendency to be mysophobic (a.k.a germophobic).
  9. My all-time favorite cartoons are Popeye, Betty Boop, and Huckleberry Hound.
  10. I am a very moody person.
  11. I wore dental braces for ten [long] years. *cue flashy smile here*
