As you well know, my good friend’s wedding is in a week’s time. I was invited to be part of her bridal entourage (Secondary Sponsor–Candle), so about month ago, I had my measurements taken by a couturier, Manang Ela, recommended by our neighbor. She used to be one of Pitoy Moreno‘s dressmakers back in the days. A week later, after purchasing all the materials needed for my dress, she started working on it. Since she had assumed the length of my dress only by making me stand on tiptoes, I had to get myself a decent pair of dress shoes for the occasion. I gave her a month deadline, two weeks before Pardz’ wedding, to give room for any further alterations.

Initially, my dress was supposed to be a haltered one (designed by Pardz’ couturier); however, I saw this venus-cut, floor-length style online which appealed more to my taste and my mother’s.

This design was not really followed to the details in my actual dress in order to conform with the church’s strict requirements, but the dressmaker nailed the fit and length which makes it a consolation. With my dress for her wedding having been delivered last Saturday, now I have to find a hairstyle inspiration to complete the look.

Here are a few of the hairstyles I saw online when I entered “hairstyles for venus-cut dress” on the search engine (photos taken from Google Images):

For an updo, I prefer the third photo—tousled with a slight pouf touch. I try to avoid tight hairstyles because I have a prominent forehead, thus I don’t feel comfortable with such. On the other hand, I find Dianna Agron’s (portrayed Quinn Fabray in Glee) hairstyle more age-appropriate. It’s simple, yet elegant.

Which do you think works best for me?

I have always been a rice person. Back in college, my friends knew me as The Kanin Queen because my appetite was as big as that of most men. I used to gorge as much as two to three cups of rice in one meal. I am not sweet-toothed, but I consume more carbohydrates than anything else in the food group. During my senior year, we had more idle time in school, so most often than not, we spent it stuffing ourselves with food. Perhaps my metabolism had slowed down, too, thus my system did not burn as much fuel like it used to. That was when I began gaining weight.

I did not work until six months after graduating from college. I thought I’d rest for a while before jumping into the corporate world. That has got to be the most stupid decision I ever made. Every single day, for six months, all I did was wake up mid-morning and fire up the computer to video chat with Roan on Skype even without having breakfast first. When he goes to sleep, that’s my cue to take my lunch. In the afternoon, either I waste all six hours oggling in front of Facebook (yes, I had one) or engage myself in a movie or TV series marathon. Roan wakes up at five o’clock everyday for training, and gets back about two hours after. We talk again for a bit while he gets ready for work, then again during his lunch break which is almost midnight in Manila. That was pretty much our routine even when he got deployed to Iraq.

March/April 2009

When I started working in October 2010, things for me got even worse. It felt like every Friday is someone’s birthday, thus we were treated with boxes of pizza, spaghetti platters, and all other comfort food one can think of. Having an appetite of a penchant for food, I eat to my heart’s desire. With this kind of sedentary lifestyle, I ballooned to my biggest weight to date: a whopping 135lbs! Okay, you might think I’m a bit overreacting at this point. Here’s the thing—I have never weighed more than 120lbs in my earlier years. My body mass index (BMI) calculation indicated that my weight then still fell under the normal weight category, but when I looked at myself closely in photos, I did not like what I saw. That’s what triggered me to do something about it.

January/March 2010

In January 2011, I got myself into an active lifestyle. I started running, even joined fun runs. Either I go for a 1- to 2-hour jog/run before I report to work or I do so in the afternoon/evening, six times a week. The hardest part had to be my withdrawal from excessive intake of carbohydrates. Gradually, I lessen my rice from a cup to half a cup and increased my consumption of fiber and protein. I take my meals like an inverted pyramid—heavy breakfast, normal to light lunch, then light to no dinner. I also added more fruits and vegetables in my food plate. It took a lot of getting used to, but I eventually got the hang of it. It takes dedication and discipline to avoid junk/greasy foods, and I endeavored not to indulge myself into these. When I did, I punish myself twice as much in my next workout to free myself from guilt.

January/February 2011

A few months later, I slightly changed my routine by incorporating other cardiovascular exercises and strength-training workouts. Roan even prepared different sets for me to work on, interchanging them to avoid boredom and muscle memory. I suppose this worked for me because most people had began to notice my weight-loss. If I may add, Roan used to be overweight in his earlier years, too. He started losing weight in college by working out (mostly weight-lifting and running), then eventually trimmed down to his current physique when he joined the Army.

When people ask me how I did it, I tell them, “Nothing happens overnight.” I guess the best [unsolicited] advice I could give anyone is to look for a routine that works best for you. It may be in the form of running, strength-/weight-training, internal-/circuit-training, sports, or even yoga. Fortunately, we have a make-shift gym at home. We have a set of weights from dumbbells to those used for bench press. We also own a mechanical treadmill, so when I don’t get to run/jog outside, I take my cardiovascular exercise indoors. I think it is also worth noting that you enjoy your workout because it helps you focus on your goal. Having a workout buddy—whether it’s your partner, sibling, or friend—does the trick, too!

To date, I have lost a total of 35lbs. I wouldn’t consider it a drastic change for the reason that I worked for it for about a year and a half. I wanted to do it right with proper diet and exercise because I have this notion that anything you lose easily, you gain twice as fast, thus crash diets were never an option. You reap what you sow, and now I benefit from my investment.

July 2012

It feels good to finally be able to wear again the clothes I used to fit into which had been one of my motivations in losing all that excess weight. It feels even better when you decide to upgrade your wardrobe, and you realize that you’re a size or two smaller than you had been. I take pride in seeing what seemed to be out of place, and actually did something about it the best way I know how. This will be a lifetime commitment, and I hope to sustain it for a healthier lifestyle.

Like most brides-to-be, a bridal shower is usually thrown by friends who are [or may not be] part of the entourage. In Pardz’ (Rivka’s) case, her colleagues at work and friends from high school had overwhelmed her with bridal showers on two different occasions. Being friends of Rivka from college, we ought to arrange another one for her when she arrives in Manila, a month before her Big Day. One of her bridesmaids, Sweet, happens to be the most proactive when it comes to party-plannings like this. She took the initiative in organizing Pardz’ bridal shower. Unfortunately, all of us are pretty much tied up with our day jobs, so we didn’t have enough time to prepare for a decent bridal shower party. In addition to that, we had to ensure that all are flexible to a specific time and day in order to squeeze in to Pardz’s very hectic schedule. Given the above-mentioned circumstances, we resolved to a get-together with a slightly different approach, thus we had a bridal dinner.

About two weeks ago, Sweet had been sending text and BBM messages to brief us with the details. They are as follows:

  1. Wear a dress.
  2. Get all dolled up. [trans. Wear make-up.]
  3. Have your hair curled to match Rivka’s locks.
  4. Get Rivka gifts that will blow her mind. Be creative and imaginative!

Upon knowing these, I immediately thought to myself:

  1. Oh, for heaven’s sake, it’s Friday! We’re supposed to be in shirts and jeans on Fridays, now I have to dress up when everyone else is dressed down!
  2. Well, I used to wear make-up at work, but that was a long time ago. Now I don’t mind looking as pale as a ghost at work.
  3. Another used to, but my hair has grown longer than before, and curling it means I have to be up three hours to get it done.
  4. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO GIVE HER?!?!?!

If Pardz had not been one of my best girl friends, I wouldn’t really exert much effort, but she is and she deserves this, so we’ll give it to her.

We didn’t have trouble in choosing the venue because UCC Café in Glorietta 3, Makati has got to be our official meeting place since we had our first dinner gathering in June. The food is great, the ambiance is nice, and those are just about what we need. Like the last time, Anj had our reservation placed at 7:30PM since most of us will be coming from work. I got there first; about an hour prior to our meeting time. It was raining, and traffic was terrible from all sides of the metro because for one, it’s Friday; second, it’s rush hour; and third, everyone’s anticipating for another long weekend. With these, I had the impression that everyone will be late.

A table for eight has been readied when I arrived about an hour before our reservation time. While waiting, I had the opportunity to ensure that I look presentable. I had myself situated at the corner of the cushioned seat where I can place all my stuff without having to worry about leaving them unattended. Since I know they are running late, I took advantage of the opportunity to catch up with my reading in order to pass the time. Sweet got in next, then Pardz followed suit. A few minutes later, Kach arrived with Sonny only to drop her off. We were already engaged in a conversation when Anj set foot in the café. It was already past eight o’clock when Mafi showed up, just when we decided to order dinner.

Our exchange of thoughts on random topics went on as we eat, and when we had consumed our meals, we began with our little tribute to Pardz. Let the pictures below do the talking:

Sweets first gift was a pair of sexy lingerie.

If this had been a battle of who had the “best-wrapped gift”, Sweet would have won. Isn’t that a lovely ribbon? Pardz even made it a make-shift headpiece! What a fashion statement you got there, Pardz! Hahaha!

I gave her two pairs of sexy undies in colors I like best.

I felt bad for my gifts wrapped in a mini-bayong!

Mafi got her a baby pink T-back and an oral sex candy. Things are beginning to get more kinky!

Mafi, did you even realize that what you lacked in the presentation of your gift you gained in that treat? I knew you had it in you. Hahaha! Just kidding!

Anj gave Pardz a tube of lubricant while Sweet gave her edible undies as her second gift!

So, Anj, how was it? I mean, how was it inside an adult shop with all these paraphernalias? What else can get more kinky than edible undies, Sweet? Oh, I don’t want to know! *face palms*

The best part was when Kach had to give a candle shaped like a mans genital!

This has got to be the crème de la crème of all gifts! With it coming from Kach, it was even more hilarious! Can’t you tell by the look on their faces?

This was my first time to be in a bridal shower with all these adult stuff, and it was so much fun to laugh the craziness off with good friends. Actually, we had to contain ourselves at some point because we were so loud we almost forgot we’re in a coffee shop! (We could have been thrown out of the establishment. Que horror!)

When we finally settled down, I took it as my cue for my little surprise for the girls. I handed my “Will You Be My…?” cards out to each of the girls. Although I’ve already told them since our engagement that they’re going to be members of my bridal entourage, I thought of making these as their souvenirs. Relieved that they found it sweet and thoughtful! You can find more on this here.

“Will You Be My Bridesmaids?”

Subsequently, Pardz distributed her DIY wedding invitations, too! Those doilies are lovely!

Before we head home, the Mafi’s and Sweet’s respective boyfriends arrived to take them home. What better way to end the night with these people?

College friends sans yours truly

A few months ago, Dad talked me into giving Mom a surprise party for her 50th birthday. We intend to invite most of her closest friends from college and from work to celebrate it with since it’s her special day. Her birthday is in September, but as early as June/July, I already had a venue/date reserved.

Dad and I even had a draft plan on our play. Since Dad’s birthday falls 10 days after Mom’s, and we always go out for dinner as a family, he will make her believe that we’re just going to have a double celebration. Dad talked me into making the invitations while my brother makes the audio-visual presentation (AVP). Each one of us will also prepare our personal birthday messages for Mom as part of our surprise.

Since I’ve been into do-it-yourself (DIY) stuff lately, I thought of making her invitations a bit more personalized than just printing out like conventional invitation cards. One afternoon at work, I came across this post for surprise party invitations. These top-secret/confidential-file-folder-themed invitations are genius! I found it really appropriate since we’re keeping it a secret from Mom. To be honest, I got excited to immediately start with my project that I bought materials right after I got off from work!

So here are the materials I used:

  • 8.5″x11″ paper board (I got a color that’s closest to a typical file folder.)
  • 4″x6.38″ coin envelopes
  • large-sized metal paper clips
  • construction papers in gray and white
  • ruler
  • scissors
  • paper cutter
  • glue stick
I just followed the instructions in the website, but did some differently like the TOP SECRET/CONFIDENTIAL  label on the sticky note outside the folder, and the CONFIDENTIAL watermark I did in Photoshop.
What do you think? I can’t wait to give these out to invited guests! I hope they’ll love them!

I woke up at an ungodly hour this morning to take a piss when I noticed that tricycles passing by our house were blowing their horns. I didn’t have an alarm clock by my bedside table nor a working wall clock, so I didn’t know the exact time. As I check the time in my phone, I looked outside my window, and suddenly at 0416H, I was wide awake. It’s been raining all night, and it hasn’t ceased, thus the water in our street was already gutter-deep. I immediately went downstairs to my parents’ room to wake them up. I knocked, and Mom answered the door. When I told her it’s already flooded in our street, she began to freak out. Dad was up the minute he heard this, and so did my brothers.

The first time we felt this sudden fear was in November 2000 when due to the strong typhoon, the wall beside a creek at a nearby city fell down. As a result, the water overflowed to neighboring villages almost as fast as it subsided. Flood water crept inside our house about 3-feet high. It was the eve of my 14th birthday. Almost the same thing happened again in 2009 when Typhoon Ondoy plagued the country. It was one of those severe tropical storm that brought most cities in Manila to heightened warning. Again, flood water crawled inside the house, but only about 1- to 2-inches high.

Today, although water didn’t go in, we were vigilant. Dad and my youngest brother took our cars to park them at McDonald’s just in case the water continues to rise. On the other hand, Mom, my other brother, and I took everything valuable upstairs in our rooms or in the roof deck. About an hour later, the water began to level off. THANK GOD! It hasn’t stopped raining, but we remained on the lookout because we could never know.

We were watching the news on TV while having breakfast, and at 0600H, it was a very heartbreaking thing to see. From rescuing trapped families in their homes to stranded motorists in the highway. It was devastating. The rain hasn’t let up to think that it’s only an effect of a southwest monsoon. One can only imagine how much more if it had been an official typhoon.

Here are a few amateur photos taken by concerned citizens via social media networking sites: Rains bring floods to NCR, provinces | Yahoo! News Philippines.

I pray that this very bad weather lets up because the entire country can only take so much.

To see you when I wake up
Is a gift I didn’t think could be real.
To know that you feel the same as I do
Is a three-fold, Utopian dream.

You do something to me that I can’t explain.
So would I be out of line if I said “I miss you”?

I see your picture.
I smell your skin on
The empty pillow next to mine.
You have only been gone ten days,
But already I’m wasting away.
I know I’ll see you again
Whether far or soon.
But I need you to know that I care,
And I miss you.
